Biosphere 2 serves as a center for research, outreach, teaching, and life-long learning about Earth, its living systems, and its place in the Universe. The former Habitat provides an opportunity for the development of large scale specialized experimental systems. The Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO) will provide a controlled environment to investigate how water is utilized in natural ecosystems and the role of life on landscapes. The primary elements of the observatory are three large sloped planting trays.
